There is a lot of Dime Novel Nick Carter in Nibs Holloway. He is a master of disguise, lightening fast on the draw, and tough as nails. There are five stories in this volume, reprinting the stories that appeared in ALL DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. Doctor Death, July 1934; A Deal In Phonies, August 1934; Cargo of Death, September 1934; Death’s IOU, October 1934; and 13 Pearls, January 1935. The five stories follow Holloway as he takes orders from his boss, jewel king, Joseph Calweiner. There was a previous story featuring Nibs Holloway published in RAPID FIRE DETECTIVE, plus another one promised, but didn’t appear. However, this book concerns these five stories from ALL DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. In the first story we are introduced to the villain, Doctor Death, but he’s killed at the end of the story. In the second story Nibs Holloway is back, this time with a simple mystery and new villain. But suddenly, in the third, a fourth, and fifth novel, Doctor Death is back. My guess is the author truly killed him off in the first story, but the editors wanted more Doctor Death stories, so Norris had to bring him back. And each time he is killed, only to return again and again.

Personally, I thought Nibs Holloway was a fantastic character, and enjoyed the author’s writing, even if it did appear to be written to formula and a throwback to dime novels. The series takes on a new oddity after the fifth story. The short stories ceased, and Edward P. Norris disappeared from ALL DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. A new Doctor Death is created, with a new hero to fight him in three published novels, and one unpublished yarn. The new author was Harold Ward, and I missed Nibs Holloway and Edward P. Norris.

The story gets stranger still. There are six more stories by Norris in several other pulp houses after he leaves ALL DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. I read his very next published story after the last one in this volume, published in SECRET AGENT X, and it was definitely a re-written Nibs Holloway yarn, minus Doctor Death, just the names of the characters are changed. The author only had a small body of work in the pulps, and I would love to see PULP TALES PRESS gather the rest of his work in a second volume. Highly recommended.

ECHOES was the hobby magazine for pulp enthusiasts. Albert Tonic called fanzines “An historical journal of limited distribution.” But ECHOES originally had a print run of 1000 copies, and a subscription circulation of over 250, with many other copies sold through dealers. It was the longest running pulp hobby magazine, beginning in June 1982 and running through December 2004, with 100 issues as a magazine, and 57 issues as a newsletter. “Great Pulp Action, And New Character.”

It’s April 1942, not long after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and pulled America into the world war. In an unnamed city, Nazi agents sabotage key points and are after secret documents from a military installation. The Operation, a government organization is set up to battle the threat; just who the organization is, is never revealed. One of their operatives is a masked vigilante called The Black Claw, dressed all in black, and carrying twin automatics; on the left glove is a claw, which can be used as a deadly weapon against foes.

Definitely one of the best new pulp characters we’ve seen in quite a while. The author is a fan of the old pulps, like Doc Savage, The Shadow, The Spider, and The Black Bat, and it can be seen in his writing. Although ten stories have been mapped out, only two have been published so far. These were actually written in 1998, but only recently published. The author could have used a proofreader, but the story is topnotch regardless of a few missing words and typos. We find streets named Wentworth Drive and Cranston. People are reading Spicy Detective Stories, The Shadow – “The Jade Dragon” – and fedoras are worn by good and bad alike. It will be a shame if the author doesn’t continue the series, these are fun reads with lots of action, and interesting characters. Just like reading old pulp stories! Highly recommended for readers of purple prose and fast action.

Review of Emperor of the Yellow Death from The Spider, Volume 6

This counts as the third time I have read a story where The Spider battles a threat against the world from the Orient. They have been some of the finest Spider stories, in my mind, that have been written. There is always a high degree of treachery and cunning that pushes The Spider to the very brink of death. This story is no exception.

 

The Spider starts thing off battling a tiger and a tigress, the first being actually ten feet long and of the seven hundred pound variety. The Spider in this instance proves that not only is he the Master of Men, but deadly beasts as well. The tigress is an Oriental beauty, whose glamour is matched only by her deadliness. All this and then the diabolical Wang-Ba. He is known as The Turtle who will carry the world on his back. A stark raving mad genius that doesn’t care how many bodies he has to climb to take over the world, he has what seems like an unlimited amount of resources to help him, even a submarine.Wang-Ba wastes no time in attacking the Spider. I am very impressed with volume 1 of Cocoanut Grove recordings. The music is a good example what was being played by the dance bands of the time. It has charm and style and is very tuneful compared with a lot that is being pumped out these days. I am a musician and I play 3 nights a week at an up-market hotel down on the South Devonshire coast, about 35 miles away. The band is a four-piece group consisting of piano, electric guitar, bass and myself on drums. We have customers coming up to us saying that we are unique in playing genuine accoustic music, and playing plenty of good old standards and a few of the more melodic recent tunes, without all the contrived electronics that bombard the ears. I say all this because there is obviously still a demand for the sort of music that the Cocoanut Grove bands played all those years ago. The big thing that makes all the difference to your sets of recordings is the amazing clear quality of sound that makes you feel that you are actually there. I will certainly be ordering volume 2 very soon as a download. I am only buying downloads now instead CDs because I dont have to waste money on expensive postage and the extra customs and postage over here - with downloads I can buy three from you for the cost of one set of CDs and feel happier that all the money goes to you to carry out more amazing work in future.

Once again I want to thank you for your prompt response in filling my last request for the three sets of Radio CD's. I listened briefly to the first episode in each set of the three sets of CD's. Dragnet, Volume 4 was wonderful, just like Volumes 1 and 2; Have Gun Will Travel also was really great. John Dehner makes a terrific Paladin, just as good - if not even better - than Richard Boone, the TV Paladin. Mr Dehner was quite an actor. His voice inflections and demeanor were totally different from his previous role in the Radio series Frontier Gentleman. Now, Luke Slaughter of Tombstone in a separate category all together!! Wow!! what perfect sound and sound effects, coupled with period characters. Sam Buffington is wonderful as Luke Slaughter. Everyone should have this set in their CD collection!! It's terrific!! I wish you continued success with Radio Archives. I will continue to sing your praises to others! I enjoy doing business with you!
