“A Fascinating Pulp Character”

In this beautifully produced and designed volume from Altus Press the only three Doc Harker novels are reprinted for the first time since 73 years. Doc Harker was unique among the pulps. Traveling the south in medicine show during the 1940s, he sold a cure- all concoction called Chickassha Remedies as he entertained the local town’s people with his aides, strong man Hercules Jones, and beautiful Brenda Sloan. A criminologist, he always seemed to find mysterious crime in the towns where he stopped. Three stories were published in the Munsey magazine, “Crime Nest”, April 1940; “Woe To The Vanquished”, June 1940; and “South of The Border”, August 1940. The stories appeared under the byline of Edwin Truett, in truth Edwin Truett Long, a Texas author popular in the Spicy magazines under a variety of pseudonyms.

Doc Harker was a fascinating pulp character, and one that readers will love. Highly recommended.

Written by Edwin Truett Long, Doc Harker was one of the last of the Munsey heroes who were introduced to battle the oncoming wave of the comic book industry. Dressed in a Prince Albert coat and looking like a Kentucky gentleman, Harker and his crew travel the country selling their cure-all Chickasha Remedies... and encounter crime at every stop. This edition collects the entire series: "Crime Nest," "Woe to the Vanquished" and "South of the Border," all from 1940 and complete, remastered, with all the original illustrations. And it's rounded out by an introduction by pulp historian Tom Johnson which reveals many facts about this previously-unidentified pulp author, along with an exhaustive Edwin Truett Long bibliography.

Coming soon from Altus Press, the complete series in one volume, featuring this interesting pulp character. I wrote the Introduction for the book, plus a new story, but we decided not to include the new story in the reprint volume due to the rights going to another publisher. Instead, I rewrote the story as another character and published it on Kindle.  The Silence of Death is available on Kindle, and will give readers unfamiliar with the character a peek at what the series was like.
