My Blog

Retirement. Publishers, thank you for the many years of reading pleasure you gave me, but all good things must come to an end. Due to failing eyesight I am forced to retire. I can no longer review your books, and any that you send will be donated to the local library, unread. Do not send any more. I can only read for a couple hours every day, and this does not allow me to finish a book in reasonable time. I will be devoting time to my own books from now on, and reading on a personal level. Books that interest me. I prefer paperbacks and hardbacks, not eBooks. My eyesight has been failing the last few years, and I cannot handle hundreds of review books any more. My books are still available for review. Anyone interested in reviewing any of them, they are found in the Link to Tom’s Books On Amazon. Contact me for pdf copies at fadingshadows40@gmail.com

Welcome To Miskatonic University

Odd tales of campus life at Miskatonic University from Brandon O'Brien - Bennett North - Kristi DeMeester - Elliot Cooper - Liz Schriftsteller - KG McAbee - Brenda Kezar - Nate Southard - Scott R. Jones - Gina Marie Guadagnino -Joseph S. Pulver, Sr. - Marcus Chan - Gwendolyn Kiste - Matthew M. Bartlett
This is your first year? Welcome! Oh, you're going to love it here at Miskatonic. Just . . . be careful. I mean, I'm sure everything will be fine, but you know, things happen. This can be a strange place. You hear stories: people changing and buildings rearranging, ghostly sounds and overly attentive textbooks, odd notions and foul deeds . . . even monsters! Hah. Just stories, right? Sure.
Faculty struggling for funding in the occult sciences. Students trying to navigate whole new worlds of possibility. Administration striving for growth and progress and not just damage control. And Arkham residents adjusting to the constant influx of new faces.
Just study hard. Party safe. Maybe find love. And don't die.

An anthology of top authors, all stories taking place at the Miskatonic University, where horror abides. A fictional university created by H.P. Lovecraft in a 1922 novel, the university is located in Arkham, a fictional town in Essex County, Massachusetts. The university and its faculty come alive - for a while, at least - in these 13 tales. Believe me, monsters find their way here to feed off those unwary souls who bring them forth.

I was given a copy of the book from the authors for an honest review. All of the writing is excellent, and the stories honor H.P, Lovecraft, as each author tells their tale of weird menace. As with any anthology, there will be one story that the reviewer will like a bit more, perhaps, than the rest. Although I enjoyed them all, I think my favorite yarn was Official Inquiry Into The Waite-Gilman-Carter Antarctic Expedition by K.G. McAbee. Wasn’t that a great title? You just know that expedition has brought back some terrifying monster for the professors to examine. Highly recommended.

On the far side of the universe is an asteroid occupied by a fascinating group of odd individuals of different alien races. It is an outpost of sorts, at the edge of civilization. The novel is a round robin of different authors taking part in telling a portion of the story as a whole; a story of every day life on the Rock. Like Babylon 5, we are pulled into the tale and don’t want to leave. Stuck on a world where they must live and work underground, most have only one great desire – to leave to Rock.

The story has no true beginning or ending, as it’s intended as a continuing series featuring numerous episodes on the Rock. I was fascinated by the characters and writing, and was surprised the series did not continue past this one book. The characters are three-dimensional; some that we may love and some we may hate, but the authors are at their story-telling best, and the Rock is one marvelous place to keep the readers entertained. The book is a steal at this low price. Highly recommended for readers of SF adventure novels, and fans of shows like Babylon 5.

“Wonderfully Fun Stories About An Imaginary Dog.”

Created by 9-year old Ellen Walters when her parents wouldn’t let her have a real dog, and she built one out of wire. Her imaginary friend then went on to have many great adventures, which she told her parents. Her dad, David Walters, was so thrilled with the concept, he asked her to write them down. On Father’s Day, she did just that, and the stories have now reached 42, and going strong.

They have been split into three anthologies, #3 just released, containing stories #30 through 42. Now the series is written and illustrated by children and professional writers and artists from around the world. This volume contains stories by Ellen Walters, Ellen “Jill” Thomasson, David Walters, Brady Walters, Donald Sullivan, K.G. “Gail” McAbee, and Tom Johnson. There is art by David Walters, Elena Yalcin, J.A. Johnson, Ellen Walters, Karsten Yawney, Alice Jones, and Travis, Michael, Valerie, and Pauline.

These stories are intended for pre-teen school children, but fun for adults, no matter what age. Most have a moral to teach to children through the eyes of Wire Dog. The main goal is to get the books in classrooms and homes to be read to children, and hopefully inspire them to write and illustrate their very own Wire Dog adventures. Currently, the books are half price on Lulu and should be on Amazon soon. I recommend the color edition, but either is a wonderful book. This is highly recommended to parents, and I hope that everyone will help to spread the word.

Winners of the Europa November Noir Giveaway: I’ve seen nothing officially released on this, although while in communication with Europa Editions, the winners were announced for PULP DEN. They are K.G. McAbee from South Carolina, and Glen Davis from California. I want to congratulate both of these folks for being named the winners. I also want to thank everyone that commented on PULP DEN during this November prize giveaway. I don’t know what books the winners will receive, but was told that they had been mailed already. Again, congratulations. I hope we can do this again sometime.

The Seething

A while back there was this outbreak, followed shortly thereafter by the recently dead seething out of morgues and hospitals. That's why the walking dead are called 'seethers'. And the disease isn't spread just by bites from these risen dead, oh no. Mosquitoes can also spread the illness, so mosquito repellent is worth its weight in gold. So, it's half-past the middle of the apocalypse, and a man sends a policeman to help his wife and three little girls. Back home with the family, it's not all roses and sunshine. The baby girl is sick, and the mom has taken her to get help, leaving the two older girls alone. Well, alone except for their brave dog, Rascal. Then, as if things couldn't possibly get worse—they do. Will the policeman escape the horde of ravening seethers and make it out of town? Does the drunk he stumbles across really know a secret? Does the mom find help for her oddly cold and unresponsive baby? And what about the two girls left alone, with only a small dog for protection? THE SEETHING. A new kind of horror….

“A Zombie Apocalypse That’s Fun To Read.”

Jack Randall is in the city for medical supplies for his youngest daughter, but the streets are packed with the living dead, zombies seeking ripe flesh to eat. Before he can obtain the medicine, the zombies are upon him. But a policeman comes to his rescue, killing the dead a second time. It doesn’t help, however, as one bites Jack, turning him into a living dead also. Now the cop must kill him. Jack, before dying tells the cop to see after his wife and daughters, not knowing the secret the policeman carries.

I don’t normally read zombies, werewolves, vampires, and horror novels, but anything that K.G. McAbee writes is going to be good. Plus, I’ve read Jim Johnson’s work before also, and knew this was going to be a story with a plot, action, and good writing. I wasn’t disappointed. The story never slowed down, the zombies plodded forward always after ripe flesh, and little could stop them. I knew going into the story that there would be few, if any survive by the end, but there is always hope, even in a zombie apocalypse. Highly recommended for the horror genre, and readers who just love a well-crafted yarn.

Dyed To Death

This is K.G. McAbee’s historical “Dyed To Death,” the winning story of our 8th annual BONA contest. This whodunit, set in a southern mill town in the early part of the last century, introduces dynamic pair of sleuths. The levelheaded town constable is assisted by a young teen, who knows a thing or two about solving crimes from reading, naturally, pulp magazines.

"Author Never Disappoints!"

The story takes place at the Grady-Best Mill Town, which is ruled by Arthur Best and his son, Jonathan Best. Hiram Alberry and his wife Esther are also workers for Arthur Best, and all become suspects in a local murder mystery. When Ida Mae Simpson is found murdered, these four have reasons to have murdered her. The victim was a loose woman, and causing problems within the mill. Guy Hansen, who runs the company store, is also the mill town constable, and his young worker, Samuel C. Nicholson assists him in the murder case. Guy was a WWI veteran, and young Sam reads pulp detectives, and wants to become a pulp writer of detective stories.

But all of their investigation proves that the four suspects were together during the time of the murder, so how could any of them be the murderer, unless …?

This was so much fun, as are all of K.G. McAbee’s stories. An award winning author of many genres, I’m not surprised that she won the Black Orchard Novella Award for this mystery. I’ve been a fan of hers for a couple of decades now, and this novella doesn’t disappoint. Highly recommended for mystery lovers of any century!
