My Blog

Retirement. Publishers, thank you for the many years of reading pleasure you gave me, but all good things must come to an end. Due to failing eyesight I am forced to retire. I can no longer review your books, and any that you send will be donated to the local library, unread. Do not send any more. I can only read for a couple hours every day, and this does not allow me to finish a book in reasonable time. I will be devoting time to my own books from now on, and reading on a personal level. Books that interest me. I prefer paperbacks and hardbacks, not eBooks. My eyesight has been failing the last few years, and I cannot handle hundreds of review books any more. My books are still available for review. Anyone interested in reviewing any of them, they are found in the Link to Tom’s Books On Amazon. Contact me for pdf copies at fadingshadows40@gmail.com

See You At The Fair Trading Cards

See You At The Fair Trading Cards

SEE YOU AT THE FAIR is a new retro-style trading card set from Acheron Mint currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. It features the pulp heroes (Doc Savage, The Phantom Detective), sports legends, robots, futuristic vehicles and other notable personalities (like AMAZING STORIES editor John W. Campbell)  that populated the 1939-1940 NY World's Fair in a card series done in the style of the Goudey Gum and Gum Inc. releases of the depression era. The project is currently funded but looking to expand to a 20 card set. SEE YOU AT THE FAIR closes on November 26.

About this project

Updated 10/28!

On October 27, 1940, the New York World's fair served its last attendees and closed its doors forever. What had started with promise and a symbol of hope of technology, social planning and medicine overcoming poverty and the continuing effects of the Great Depression had ended with a new European war that would soon spread to the entire world. That same technology of the future would soon be used to murder millions of people across the globe. The dreams of flying cars and robotic servants and central databank that could be accessed by anyone with a then-new television quickly faded, victim of the crushing grim reality faced by millions in the first years of World War 2. It wasn't until 25 years later that the small children who had witnessed the fair firsthand, some now parents themselves, could take a nostalgic look at it, now living in the future of THEIR fair. Ironically the 4 wars after 1939 (World War 2, The Cold War, Korea and Vietnam) had brought more change than any fair promoter or civil planner could have ever dreamed of.
And the social change of the late 1960's was only beginning.
The fair continues to fascinate us as does the pop culture of that era. Aimee Mann wrote a song about it. The popular animated TV show is named after its central exhibit. Almost every blockbuster or genre TV show has some roots in the pulp era of the 1930's and 40's. Is it the teardrop shaped cars or the flying wings? It it the hokey and sometimes laughable predictions of the future? Or is it the personalities of the fair? Almost every high profile guest who attended the fair is now a legend.

I wanted to create a set in line with something that Goudey or Gum Inc might have released. These are the personalities of the fair, not pictures of the pavilions. Something that the kids of the era who were already buying Superman Gum and Sport Kings gum would be interested in, as a lot of the high profile guests of the fair had already been featured in sets. It's strange to think why this set was never produced, other than a national gum card set used to promote a regional World Fair at a time when few people could afford to travel didn't make financial sense. Whatever the reason, SEE YOU AT THE FAIR is here, 75 years later.
As with most of my vintage sets, cards will be non-glossy in keeping with the production methods of the era. Noted fan dancer/burlesque queen Sally Rand was included as the single representative of the 1939 San Francisco Expo, the west coast World Fair. Both Doc Savage and Maximus, the giant "goblin" from Doc Savage Magazine's THE WORLD'S FAIR GOBLIN are included, as Doc and the Phantom Detective were the only pulp heroes to visit the fair while it was open. Two New York Yankees are included. The Fantom of the Fair from Centaur Comics was the only Fair-based superhero of the era. Lou Gehrig had just retired and the Yankees won the Pennant in 1939. Johnny Weissmuller would be well known to kids as Tarzan. Slam Bradley was more established than either Superman or Batman in 1939 When he appeared in World's Fair Comics. Frank Buck was one of the biggest stars of the era and Elektro the Moto-Man is still cool, even today. Finally noted designer Norman Bel Geddes, the architect of GM's Futurama exhibit was the focal point of the fair. I wanted both him and one of his streamlined designs to be represented. As usual the style is very pulp like in keeping with the pop culture of the era. H.J. Ward and Hubert Rogers were the main artistic influences.
Like all of my series these will be limited to 145 sets and will include one sketch card per pack....

Included with the base set, for all pledges $28 and over is an original hand-drawn sketch card of one of the 16 subjects in the set, and maybe even a few others! Sketch cards will be inserted randomly in the retail versions but Kickstarter backers will receive a sketch of their choice!

some sketch cards from previous Acheron Mint sets.

For all pledges $45 and above, a special 12 x 18 inch poster featuring Elektro, The Moto-Man with an Emerald City of Oz theme has been created exclusively for this Kickstarter.

All pledges $28 and over will receive a special "I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE" pin like those given out at the GM Futurama exhibit.

As always I will be offering prints for this set. This will be the only time these prints will be available, as I am not in the print business. I usually get requests for prints after the campaign has ended but only print enough to fulfill rewards, so if you want them, pledge now! Hang these stunning 8 1/2 by 11 inch prints in your home, office, den, or perisphere with pride.

Works in progress. All prints will have backgrounds.

An array of rewards is offered for this project. Like my previous projects, prints will only be available through Kickstarter and will not be available for retail. So pledge now if you want them!

Risks and challenges

The artwork is 90 percent complete, aside from color, contrast, brightness correction, correcting eye and hair color, spelling corrections, and minor details of that nature. There is always some frustration and delays from dealing with a commercial printer, but once the funds are released, essentially all there is to do is click a few buttons to send printing orders off. My previous five Kickstarters have all shipped no later than a few weeks off schedule. I've been doing this sort of thing for over a decade now, and shipped to every continent except Antarctica.

The Bastards of Pizzofalcone

A new series of hardboiled crime fiction set in contemporary Naples by the author of the internationally bestselling Commissario Ricciardi series.
They've made a fresh start at the Pizzofalcone precinct of Naples. They fired every member of the investigative branch after they were found guilty of corruption. Now, there's a group of detectives, a new commissario, and a new superintendent. The new cops immediately find themselves investigating a high-profile murder that has the whole town on edge.
Heading the investigation is Inspector Lojacono, known as "the Chinaman," a cop with a checkered past who is currently riding a reputation as a crack investigator after having captured a serial killer known as "The Crocodile." Lojacono's partner is Aragona, who wants to be known as "Serpico," but the name doesn't stick. Luigi Palma, a.k.a. "Gigi," is the Commissario, Francesco Romano, known as "Hulk," is the slightly self-deluded lieutenant. Lojacono, Aragona, Palma, and Romano are joined by a cast of cops portrayed by bestselling author Maurizio de Giovanni with depth and intimate knowledge of the close-knit world of police investigators.

“The Author Is In A Class of His Own.”

Set in contemporary Naples, the Pizzofalcone precinct is about to be shut down; the previous detectives had intercepted a drug deal, but only reported a portion of the merchandise, keeping the rest to sell on the streets. Caught, the precinct was now called the Bastards because of the bad cops. It’s decided to give them another chance by bringing in Commissario Luigi “Gigi” Palma, who originally appeared in THE CROCODILE, and four detectives: Inspector Giuseppe “The Chinaman” Lojacono, who also appeared in THE CROCODILE; Corporal Aragona Marco; Warrant Officer Francisco “Hulk” Romano; and Officer 1st Class Alessandra Di Nardo. All are considered rejects from their old units, and by reassigning them to Pizzofalcone, they are out of everyone’s hair. Working with them are Deputy Captain Giorgio Pisanelli and Deputy Sergeant Ottavia Calibreose from the original squad, whom were proven innocent of the drug deal. The Magistrate, Dottoressa Piras, introduced in THE CROCODILE, is also a regular cast.

Their first case is the murder of the wife of an important family. Everything points to the husband as her killer, but the detectives must find evidence that will stand up in court. Lojacono and Marco are assigned the murder, while Di Nardo and Romano are sent to investigate the report of a girl held prisoner in an apartment. Meanwhile, Calibreose uses her electronics skills to follow the computer trail the investigators need on suspects. Pisanelli uses his knowledge of the area, and people, to assist in the investigation while also searching for a killer he suspects in a series of suicides.

Maurizio De Giovanni is one of the top mystery writers in the field today. He is in a class of his own. He is certainly the best writer coming out of Europe that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Although the plot and mystery are topnotch, it is the characters that drive the story. These are characters you want to know, they are your friends, and you feel their emotions. They keep you turning the pages, and you never want them to leave you. Highly recommended to mystery readers, and anyone who loves well-written stories with characters that come alive.

WIRE DOG Storybook #3

WIRE DOG Story Book #3: (Children’s Stories)

88 Pages
Price $28.89 (color)
Price $9.95 (b&w)
Rating 5-Stars

“Wonderfully Fun Stories About An Imaginary Dog.”

Created by 9-year old Ellen Walters when her parents wouldn’t let her have a real dog, and she built one out of wire. Her imaginary friend then went on to have many great adventures, which she told her parents. Her dad, David Walters, was so thrilled with the concept, he asked her to write them down. On Father’s Day, she did just that, and the stories have now reached 42, and going strong.

They have been split into three anthologies, #3 just released, containing stories #30 through 42. Now the series is written and illustrated by children and professional writers and artists from around the world. This volume contains stories by Ellen Walters, Ellen “Jill” Thomasson, David Walters, Brady Walters, Donald Sullivan, K.G. “Gail” McAbee, and Tom Johnson. There is art by David Walters, Elena Yalcin, J.A. Johnson, Ellen Walters, Karsten Yawney, Alice Jones, and Travis, Michael, Valerie, and Pauline.

These stories are intended for pre-teen school children, but fun for adults, no matter what age. Most have a moral to teach to children through the eyes of Wire Dog. The main goal is to get the books in classrooms and homes to be read to children, and hopefully inspire them to write and illustrate their very own Wire Dog adventures. Currently, the books are half price on Lulu and should be on Amazon soon. I recommend the color edition, but either is a wonderful book. This is highly recommended to parents, and I hope that everyone will help to spread the word.

The Secret Cabal

Ben Casey, a fired crime reporter, stumbles upon the story of a life time. A story that illuminates who is responsible for all the evil acts that take place in the world. He discovers a conspiracy that puts his life in jeopardy, but he is determined to see it to the end and write his story.
Making an appearance in this story is private dick, Harvey Valentine, who helps Ben Casey reach his destination and get his story.
No one is above THE SECRET CABAL.

The Secret Cabal (Hardboiled)

Fired from his newspaper job, Casey is looking for something to do when he chances upon a drunk in a bar hitting strangers up for drinks by telling them a weird story about his downfall from politics by a secret organization once known as the Illuminati, now calling themselves the Secret Cabal. Since this looks like a story Casey might sell to another newspaper he buys the man drinks and gets leads that he can follow up on.

The trail leads Casey to an island where he finds an underground complex with a mystifying entrance. Finding the mysterious bunker empty, he leaves, but spots a black helicopter en route to the island as he departs. The chopper was unmarked. Did they see him? Deciding he needs help collaborating his story he brings in private detective Harvey Valentine. Casey takes Valentine to the island, but they now find the compound occupied – by armed men dressed as clowns.

This was a fun story, as only R. Archer can spin a tale. Although there were some editing problems, my only complaint is a personal one. I wish the author would tone down the profanity a bit. I’ve always thought an author was a master of words, not mastered by them. I appreciate good dialogue, and an overuse of profanity will ruin the dialogue for me. I view profanity as a weakness, and I want strong dialogue between the characters. Hardboiled fiction refers to tough detectives with a rough attitude towards the establishment, but the original writers could show that toughness in words other than profanity. But for the fun of the story, and as an admirer of the author’s work, I highly recommend this for the hardboiled fiction lovers.

Pacific Burn

In recognition for his role in solving the Japantown murders in San Francisco, antiques dealer and sometime-PI Jim Brodie has just been brought on as the liaison for the mayor’s new Pacific Rim Friendship Program. Brodie in turn recruits his friend, the renowned Japanese artist Ken Nobuki, and after a promising meeting with city officials and a picture-perfect photo op, Brodie and Nobuki leave City Hall for a waiting limo.
But as soon as they exit the building, a sniper attacks them from the roof of the Asian Art Museum. Quick thinking allows Brodie to escape, but Nobuki ends up hospitalized and in a coma. Brodie soon realizes that, with the suspicious and untimely death of Nobuki’s oldest son a week earlier in Napa Valley, someone may be targeting his friend’s family—and killing them off one by one.
Suspects are nearly too numerous to name—and could be in the United States or anywhere along the Pacific Rim. The quest for answers takes Brodie from his beloved San Francisco to Washington, DC, in a confrontation with the DHS, the CIA, and the FBI; then on to Tokyo, Kyoto, and beyond, in search of what his Japanese sources tell him is a legendary killer in both senses of the word—said to be more rumor than real, but deadlier than anything else they’ve ever encountered if the whispers are true.

“Smooth Writing, Fast Paced, And Non-Stop Action.”

A murder in Napa Valley brings Jim Brodie into the case. Brodie, a dealer of Japanese and oriental objects de art, is an expert on Japanese language and culture. The Napa Valley murder involved a Japanese male, and his son was a witness, and the police need Brodie’s help in translating. The murder may also tie in with the mayor’s wishes to unite his city with the Pacific Rim Friendship program. In fact, the father of the Napa Valley dead man is shot on the City Hall steps, and might die from the wound.

Brodie is pulled even deeper into the case when the Nobuki daughter is also targeted, and government agents of the CIA, FBI, and DHS try to derail him and arrest the Japanese girl. The case has deeper significance as an assassin called the Steam Walker is hired to kill the Nobuki family and Jim Brodie. So far, the assassin hasn’t failed in a mission, and his martial arts skills are far beyond that of Jim Brodie.

This was another fast paced action thriller that takes place in America and Japan. The writing is smooth, and the characters come alive. The plot has many twists, until the mastermind behind the assassin is finally uncovered, and the assassin unmasked. This is topnotch story telling from the first page to the last. Highly recommended for thriller and action lovers.
