59th Anniversary:
On November 24th, 1958, Tom Johnson, age 18 and 4 months old, joined
the US Army to see the world, and he did (LOL). Hard to believe it was that
long ago. I’ve been retired for almost 40 years now. Did someone call me old?
Yeah, I feel it, too (G).
I feel it, too, Tom. And I went in the Army almost eleven years after you did. Been retired from the Missouri National Guard for twenty-one years.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good life. Even the bad assignments were tolerable, as you knew you would eventually be shipped somewhere else. I remember returning from France to Fort Wolters with six years in grade as E-4, and my company commander asked what rock I had been stationed under (LOL). He immediately sent me before the E-5 Board for the next round of promotions. Problem was, France was a good assignment, we were just stationed in a Detachment thirty miles from headquarters, and HQ was where the officers were, and, sadly, where the stripes went (LOL). MPs had a hard time making rank as it was, though. Still, I wouldn't trade those twenty years for any other job. Bad part, I still dream (nightmares?) about some parts of it, even after nearly fifty years.
